Functional Capacity Evaluation

We use The Blankenship Forensic Functional Capacity Evaluation System.
It is in our opinion the best test system and can assess the presence of Symptom and Disability Exaggeration Behaviours in clients using cutting edge computer technology. |

What Comprises a Quality FCE?
| |
First, it is imperative to have your FCE's performed only by a qualified professional, preferably a Physiotherapist who has been certified as an FCE Evaluator by one of the leading FCE Systems.
This will help assure that a quality FCE has been performed for your company. |
Second, FCE's are more flexible and more sophisticated now than ever before. So it is important to identify the questions you want the FCE to answer and then request the proper type of FCE that will be most likely to provide the information you need. |
| |
Third, it is important to ask if a detailed Musculoskeletal Evaluation is going to be performed with the FCE, it can document significant anatomic and functional deficits that can automatically preclude some work activities. Without this information, the worker's ability to work could be overstated. |
Fourth, the worker's material handling ability should not be established by Static Strength Testing only. Every FCE should include Dynamic Box Lifting Tests, which are Real-World tests of Material Handling. Static Strength Testing provides important information, but the entire FCE should not be based entirely on Static Strength Testing. |
| |
Fifth, higher quality FCE's are usually Computerised FCE's, which have many advantages over a Manual FCE. Although a computer cannot guarantee quality, the FCE Evaluator can. And a computerised FCE in the hands of a qualified FCE Evaluator is truly a win-win combination for everyone. |
Sixth, quality FCE's contain a method for verifying whether or not the worker cooperates with the FCE. This is usually called a Reliability Profile. The key components are profiles for Symptom Exaggeration, a question of whether or not the worker is reporting their symptoms accurately. Non- Organic Signs, which determines whether or not the worker is cooperating with the Musculoskeletal Evaluation, and a Validity Profile, which determines whether or not the worker is exerting a sincere level of effort on the FCE tests. The presence of pain or the severity of pain has no bearing on whether or not a worker passes the Reliability Profile. If a sincere level of effort is exerted, the worker will pass their Reliability Profile regardless of their pain or medical condition. |
| |
Seventh, the FCE Report should contain at least two components - an FCE Form that documents the worker's safe work ability and detailed narrative and graphic printouts from the computerised Functional Capacity Evaluation. The report should be ready to mail in one working week. All urgent requests are accommodated.
